Blacksmith 101

Blacksmith 101

Blacksmith 101 at Blandford—learn fire, metal, and hammer craft from an experienced smith.

Ever wonder how blacksmiths transform metal into beautiful and useful pieces? This introductory class walks you through the fundamentals in a real forge setting. An experienced blacksmith will cover essential topics like safety practices, tools, and fire building, then guide you as you create your own decorative item to take home. No prior experience needed—just an interest in learning the craft. The center provides all necessary safety gear, including gloves, eye protection, and ear protection. This program is for adults only (18+) and requires advance registration. The cost is $100 for members and $120 for non-members. Since the forge is located in an unheated, drafty building, plan to dress warmly and wear long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy closed-toe shoes. Non-synthetic fabrics offer better protection from sparks, though the center can loan you a leather apron if needed. Don't forget to bring a water bottle. Spots may fill up, so register early—you can join the waitlist at no charge if the class is full.
