Julie Green: The Last Supper
Explore a powerful large-scale art installation at the Grand Rapids Art Museum.
Julie Green devoted over two decades to creating The Last Supper, a striking art installation that features images of final meals hand-painted onto ceramic plates using cobalt blue mineral paint and then kiln-fired. The Grand Rapids Art Museum presentation is only the second time all of Green's plates from this ambitious project will be shown together, making it a rare opportunity to experience the complete work. The installation was previously featured at ArtPrize 2015, where it earned recognition as a finalist for the 3D Juried Prize.
This thought-provoking exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the U.S. prison system and how society regards incarcerated individuals. Through the universal language of food and meal traditions, Green creates a bridge of empathy, encouraging viewers to see the humanity in people who are often overlooked. It's a meaningful experience for families and adults interested in contemporary art that addresses social themes in accessible, visually compelling ways.
