Moth Sheeting and Nocturnal Sketching at Saul Lake Bog Nature Preserve
Evening nature program: watch moths and sketch nocturnal wildlife.
Bring the family for an evening of outdoor discovery as local nature experts guide you through an exciting moth-watching adventure. Using a technique called lightsheetingâwhere a white sheet is illuminated to attract nocturnal insectsâyou'll observe and identify moths and other night-flying creatures up close. This hands-on approach lets everyone participate in real citizen science while learning about local biodiversity. The event partners with John Ball Zoo, Querkus Creative, GRAM, and Bug Club to showcase the moths active during this time of year.
Plan for an after-dark outdoor experience, so dress warmly and bring a headlamp or flashlight. Wear long pants and socks for tick protection. The preserve offers free parking in a grass lot, and the group will gather at 8:30 p.m. before heading into the preserve together. Refreshments are included. We recommend downloading the iNaturalist app before you go to help with identifying what you find. In case of severe weather, the event may be postponedâyou'll be notified by email and social media if that happens. This is a wonderful way for curious families to experience nighttime nature and learn from experts in a relaxed, collaborative setting.
